Over 19 crore people watched Narendra Modi’s speech announcing a stimulus package across 197 TV channels, according to BARC data reported by Mint.
This was slightly lower than the 20.3 crore who tuned in to watch the prime minister announce the lockdown in March but both figures are higher than the viewership for the 2019 IPL finals: 13.3 crore.
The 8pm announcement of demonetisation in 2016 attracted 5.7 crore viewers across 114 channels. The abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir in 2019 drew 6.5 crore viewers across 163 channels.
